During my new office project, I picked up a clock from Ikea. It was sleek, simple and slightly over sized. I liked it...but didn't love it enough to leave as is. I knew I wanted to create something dramatic without changing the face of the clock so I decided to take a chance and bought it anyway. On my ride back to the city....it finally came to me. Create a Grandfather clock! My interpretation... a modern story...
I purchase faux tin that is usually applied as a backdrop or ceiling. Instead I cut down to the desired size and picked out different designs.

It was a super duper long week and I am glad it is over. Lots of creative juices flowed and I certainly pounded the pavement but at the end of it all, it makes me happy to be able to create.

The Holidays are here! Yay! That means decorating for the holidays. This year I wanted to look for resources since I was decorating the bar, http://www.nakedlunchnyc.com/. booze? Bottles? Ahhhh cups!

I just wanted to do something a wee bit different. It required a hula hoop, metal wire, clear wire, spray paint and ooooh did I mentioned cups? Plastic cups (glass will be heavy and delicate for the hola hoop base).

Tied, sprayed, wrapped in lights and hung. Another good idea is to use actual wreaths. I prefer plastic (please save the trees). Instead of the usual ornament just add what you already have . To polish up the look, spray paint the object and hang only on one side to add a touch of interest and a touch of arstey edge.

This past weekend, J and I wandered around the city and one of our stops was obviously Urban Outfitters as you can see in one of my most recent blogs (same day). During our fun day outing, I spotted this wallet/ clutch. It caught my eye and made me soooo soooo happy. It reminded me of a little something...

Although I wrote blogs in past about these pieces, I had to reintroduce it. The clutches made me do it.

There is something amazingly striking about touches of black. Not only is it bold, its also incredibly sexy. Even if some interiors feel a tad masculine for those that prefer a softer side, simply add large oversized branches of flowers, candles and a soft accent pillow of silver sequins or something super girly. Remember to add touches because too many accessories may ruin the clean wash of black and it's friendly contrast, white... Even if it is on yourself.

Obviously I am a lover of very large striking pieces of art. Either photography, print, or paint... it's all art. Art is truly a personal journey and we all have something that makes our heart skip a couple of beats. But as you can see from my own interior spaces, I am obsessed with size. Oversized striking art that is. You don't need much in a space. Even if a space is spare but if you own that ONE center piece, it can set the room from being ordinary to completely extraordinary. It can be a chandelier, or brightly patterned chair, but for me...in this area of topic, art is best when big!

So I have been working on a lot of different things but one of my biggest has been my sculptural art. I have my giant passion for the environment... all Eco and made out of recycled...stuff! At the end of the day, I believe it represents me. My art is inspired by my city. My New York. I want to create art that one may want to feel, touch, to walk up to and examine...explore. It's not easy to share this, because art is just such a personal journey. It's like exposing my under belly, but I just want to inspire, create and simply do what I am deeply passionate about. Without the slight uncomfortable exposure...I won't be able to inspire and that's a greater discomfort. One life guys. We should do what it is that life is calling you to do and for me, I just wanna create.

I was going through my pictures and found this in my library bank of pictures. I found images of my very first project ever (my own home doesn't count). It was also my very first (not for moi) piece of art that I put up for adoption. My first client was very particular and knew what she wanted and knew exactly what she didn't want. We were almost complete with the decorating and remodeling of her Chelsea apartment, but we couldn't find art that would work, especially within a very tight budget. I searched high and low...even online. What I found...she didn't really like and truly, neither did I. That's when i decided to paint my own. Sometimes a woman just has to roll up the sleeves, whip out the big brushes, turn it into a DIY project and get those fingernails dirty.

The beginning.... I was a little nervous. I never painted for anyone, but i was inspired by my client. She is quite a character and a very strong minded individual. She is very feminine and designs her own line of jewelry so it was all about jeweled tones for me. She was my muse. I wanted to create a rich abstract piece. Like my signature in all arts I create, I added texture to create abrasion within the rich mix of golds, teals, purples and touches of wine.

Getting right into the Groove...

End results. Now she goes for adoption and is on display for her new mommy.

During my trip to Vegas my head was spinning when I spotted a wall installation of photographs. Ooooo I must have. Valerie Berlin has captured my interest. I am a lover of quiet, yet striking oversized art so this set of photographs...almost mysterious and strange... Has claimed me as a fan. The first set, is a series of images, small objects collected and photographed to create one story. The second is a Moroccan Bride series. Stunning. It Would be amazing to set in one of my projects, or within my own space. Oooooo Where's my list for santa?

In the middle of Naked Lunch, the oval room, it was always a wee bit unfinished. It just needed accessories...like earrings. Being on a tight budget, I wanted to dress up the empty rod that framed the outer part of the oval round area. I love love love to recycle and find ways to create the new with the old. I decided to use some good ol' bottle caps.

Being a bar, it is easy to grab a handful of bottle caps and whip into something useful. Many drunks and empty bottles later...

Step one- Grab a mallet.
Step two- flatten edges on flat surface. (watch fingers)
Step three- Lightly cover caps with black, gold and bronze paint.
Step four- Drill holes and tie with thin fishing wire

Warning: It's a bit time consuming but its worth it.

And voila. Cheap, Eco, fun and quite elegant!

There is a quiet satisfaction when you set your mind to something and take full action in trying to achieve exactly what you aim for. I may not be conventional...but I am glad for it. For a long time, I struggled with trying to stay in a box of "normal" and it didn't work for me. It contained me and I was deeply unhappy. Today, hanging on the outside is my natural place, even if no one gets it right now, I know they will one day. I truly love sharing my love for creating and must share this singing passion. It's deeply rooted within me and I intend to plant many seeds through my art and many creative endeavors... all in heels of course, or cute oxfords.

It's no secret how I am a lover of spaces that are modern, clean and created with a fresh approach. Above all, Eco is not only stylish but deeply, deeply necessary. As a child of New York City, I was always inspired by concrete and distressed walls. Truly sexy. I know many believe that concrete is a look that is hard and cold but I hope to someday change that and form new opinions in the world of old tradition.

Creating Motion within space.

So here it is...another project done and today I picked up an armfull of Baby's Breath. I love Baby's Breath... I just don't love them as the fillers for other flowers. Alone... Baby's Breath is airy, modern, elegant and clean. It will instantly add that needed touch of beauty to my photos.

So it is a space for Holistic healing. A place women can join, have workshops, massages, learn various breathing techniques, and stretches. A place of peace and a space where women can get in touch with their softer side, inner peace, love and escape from the world outside. My challenge was the $1000.00 budget. Yikes. Unlike television, I don't have a handy carpenter, a team, not even a car. What I did have was the obvious budget and serious deadline. So below... that was the before...

I decided on soft silver/ pearl white stripes because the room was so flat and motionless. Energy is forever in motion and I wanted all that walked through that door to sense the energy and flow. Colors remained almost watered down and soft. Nothing over powers the other in this room. Soft harmony.

I am proud of these pieces. Everything has some kind of movement but nothing is loud. Everything is a soft hum.

All wood furniture was repainted. All are vintage pieces in a dark walnut finish. So I whipped out the magic paint brush and went crazy. I painted over everything. White paint and a stunning plum was my palette.

These mirrors and small dresser were a tad labor intensive but quite worth it. The results is a punch of elegance and walnut left on the dresser allows the chair to tie into the space. It is elegant and warm.

It was an exhausting project, but I proudly got it done. There was so much more that I wanted to do but the budget limited me but I stretched the dollar and cents. I believe it was a job well done and completed with my two hands. I think it's time to celebrate! Cherry Coke please...now...please!

laboring Paper

I went a little nuts with Glassine paper. Glassine is a very thin and smooth type of paper which is air and water resistant. It is generally translucent unless dyes are added to color the paper or make it opaque. This paper is usually used to cover art...well I decided to turn this paper into art.

One way was for the Holiday season... I cut them in to shapes of pedals and tied a long strand of string to hold it all together. I used a thicker string because it will help weigh them down against the ceiling. It danced gracefully with the twirling air. These hand made strands graced the ceiling adding a touch of holiday elegance.

Feels like snow pedals falling

Once again, I needed to dress up an old paper lantern found at Pearl River for my 1000 budget spa project. I have made a few verisons in the past but this is my favorite version. Complete in Glassine paper but it is a stronger elegant element than the fabric version made in the past.

Mirror Mirror on the wall...

I love strolling through the 99 cent stores. You can never tell just what you may find. Although times have changed and the 99 cent store is no longer truly 99 cent. Cups may run up to a 1.20...but overall its still worth it. So every now and then lady luck walks along my side. I always hope to run into something cool that I can paint or warp into something stunning and fabulous.

While working on my tight budgeted project, I decided to take a walk to the 99 cent store located in my neighborhood. Aside from picking up jute rope and paint brushes which was already on my shopping list, I walked into the mirror section. In one particular bin I spotted circular mirrors made in cheap white plastic. At 1.59...still a deal because of its size (12" round) and all the gianormous possibilities. Although it would be a tad labor intensive and time consuming I knew I could turn these mirrors into little beauts. In addition, cheap things always look more costly...like a collection when placed in sets. I knew these would fill a whole wall and take me well under budget for my project. So I packed them all in my arms and walked to the cashier to check out.

cheap and white shiney plastic. I popped out the mirror from the frame and I decided to dress it up with this great Metallic paint from Modern Masters in Pearl White. Don't forget to prime plastic before painting. It took me a few coats of primer because the surface was ultra smooth.

Modern Masters is a great brand with all types of finishes. I highly recoomend but this is not easy to find. I have luck at the Benjamin Moore store or you can purchase through their website. http://shop.modernmasters.com/products/category/4107.0.1.1.79783.0.0.0.0

And the results...

I would say it turned out incredibly elegant and looks quite expensive. It is now the main element in the room while it brightens and opens up the space. Who would've know this came from the dollar store? ((patting myself on the back)))

What kind of Designer would I be if i didn't try to save the world... while beautifying it? I run all over the place and see millions of little things on the market. All can easily fill a home... full of just stuff. Store after store, there are so many things...something for everyone. Again, may I mention...just stuff. But recently, I came across this organization, Elephant Parade. What do they do? They create stunning colorful sculptures of elephants in an effort to save the Asian Elephant. Impressive and stunning...

The Asian Elephant, there are now only 35,000 left in the world. Can you image only having 35,000 people in the world? That is a real problem and we have to do something now. I haven't had the opportunity to see an Asian Elephant yet...and I plan to see them live, well and OWNING the rights to live on this planet with us! I want my grandchildren and the children after to get the opportunity and honor to see these amazing beauties. Not convinced? See below...

I am obsessed with grouping things together. Items become instant art when placed together even when the sizes, shapes, and colors vary...just as long as it's one of the same. So gather your books, lanterns, vases together to truly bring a strong and interesting element into your room. Keep that in mind during your next trip to the flea markets, and yard sales.

Roll on the paper...

So I am not one that delivers tradition, nor am I completely rebellious because I truly do respect tradition. I just believe in distorting tradition in new modern ways for people to thrive in.

In the dining room, a striking red 8 seater lobster red table, clear glass chandelier, a large reflective floor mirror, and elegant sheer curtains that dresses up the windows, I knew I needed to fill the wall up with something special. Something that would compete, yet balance all of the items in the dining room. In a home that houses three gorgeous kids, I wanted to fill the wall up with their photographs. Frames? Noooo. Should I wallpaper their photos directly onto the wall? Hmmm...nah... I didn't want wallpaper, but I did want to capture the mood of wallpaper without the flat surface.
I ended up at the lumber yards. I decided to paste them on plywood for texture and that slight touch of off-the-wall effect.
If you are anything like me... I don't like lumber yards, but they have a great inventory. You can pick the type of wood you want and they sell them in sheets. I had to purchase two sheets totaling up to 150.00 and they cut it down to size as you wait. Total wait time...15 minutes. Not bad! Quite heavy so make sure you have a way of transporting these boards.

After hauling the boards, I painted the edges white. I deliberately didn't cover every edge and left some corners exposed to create a distressed look. Not perfect so it would be a nice contrast to all of the reflective and shiny items in the room
I sealed the photographs with resin to have a strong protective coating. Resin tends to be shiny...very shiny. Shiny is great, but I think that there were enough reflective items in the room. In addition, I wanted the pieces to be a tad bit distressed so I decided to finish it off with Flat Poly. Flat Poly is hard to find and although you would think Home Depot has it all, you won't find it there. You are better off finding the jackpot at a specialty hardware shop like Whitey's NYC.

Off-the-wall
I believe the end result is edgy and funky. At the same time it remains elegant enough to host traditional Holiday parties, small dinner parties, or quiet family dinners. A little taste of the unexpected...just like mom's baked pies... ummmm....you know what I mean.

Putting it up.

I think it is never easy putting a collage of frames without inflicting unwanted damage to your wall. Holes, holes and a few more misplaced nail holes? Well here is a simple way of placing your frames without any damage and you won't need to buy one of those silly kits they sell in stores. You know, the kit that comes with a family of uninspiring frames claiming you can now create a gallery of your own. Now here's a solution and you can use your choice of frames, or/ and mirrors your little heart desires.

Simply, get some paper and please be Eco. You can use what you already have like old news papers. I am currently using pattern paper. I have a gianormous roll of pattern paper I saved from my Fashion days. I no longer use it for dress patterns, instead I use it as outlines for my art and stencils. Simply place frames on top of paper and outline the amount of frames you plan to put up. Cut out each outline and tape them on the wall. I personally like blue painters tape because they won't peel off your walls. In addition, the tape is strong and will hold up each stencil for a long period of time. Arrange as you like, rearrange, arrange and rearrange until you get the results you are after.

And ta-dahhhh I use it everywhere!

Putting up an amazing gallery of art doesn't have to be intimating. Art is striking and an important element in the room. I walk into many homes where people are completely intimated and they leave their walls bare. A mirror, or a group of frames will sit in the corner of the room. No longer. Now its easy. (((fingers snap))) Yay!

This Upper East Side apartment, went through a great surprising transformation. A rare New York Space in a prewar building. Sleek built in cabinetry, crown moldings, two bedrooms, two baths...it is a spacious apartment for a young newly married couple. They knew they wanted to keep the Upper East Side elegance, but also desired the comfort of Downtown chic. I wanted to create a space that infused casual, and elegance. Fun against sleek. Something city along side something far away... just a little more stylized. Keep the palette calm with soft splashes of color. Soothing grays, creams, blues, purples and orangey reds. I sought out to add color but kept it very offbeat and a tad unexpected.

Low-key big city glamour. From a far, the gallery of frames look sleek, but up close you will see whimsical images gracing the wall. From zebras, carnivals, and an image of a clothes line, a tad downtown, silly and fun... but the jewel color tones and sleek silver frames dresses up the wall.

Madeline Weinrib pillows gracefully sits upon the sofa. A sisel rug grounds the floor helps to keep this area casual, as a Knoll coffee table, and a tray full accessories keeps it modern, yet soft.

Despite the apartments refined look, we picked a sofa that would make it easy to sprawl out in. It has been tested and lavish enough for a grown man (actually tested by groom) to take a nap.

I created a collage, a wall full of photography. Recently married, I wanted to showcase their love and the ties to their close knit family.
To take it from getting too serious, a stunning red console is a rare find. This piece was inherit by the brides mother. I wanted to contrast it with blues and teals. It's a table filled with treasures.

Bedroom

The color scheme in the bedroom remains soothing and quite inviting. From the floor up, a soothing palette reigns. The colors are approachable, cool, yet warm. Furniture was kept light and airy. I decided to blow up the couple's self taken photography just to simply add a personal touch. Scenic views from a recent trip to Africa becomes bedroom art. Why hide that in a drawer?

My client owns lots of costume jewelry. I wanted to make storage useful but also beautiful to look at. In addition, I wanted to create something that would be amazing to show off. I believe I achieved just that. Uptown doesn't have to mean stuffy. Downtown doesn't mean goofy. When met in the middle, it simply proves opposites can attract. And in this case, it certainly does. It's harmonious and tranquil.

Beige in the bedroom... first, I am not a beige girl. I can understand beige in a kitchen, or bathroom, but I have a "no" rule to the bedroom. Please don't mistaken as camel, or the color nude which owns a touch of champagne. I adore mocha's and even certain gray taupe's, but beige with that little hint of yellow is soooo not flattering, not to mention completely dated. I truly wish that I didn't have to see beige in any bedrooms, or living rooms, but sadly I see it a lot. In addition, I think most people neglect to pick the right shade. I do understand that their goal is to stay clear of white. A belief that if it isn't white it would look better with age, because it won't pick up dirt. Not the case. The yellow gets more yellow and the beige gets more ummmm dingy. The beige is never striking... you don't even really see it on fashion runways. That's clue #1.
It is also important to remember, that a room should make you look good, feel good and bring out your current furniture. If you have blue eyes, blond hair... black makes it all pop. You should apply the same concept to your room. If you would never wear a particular color, just why paint it on your wall? It is a sad downing color that washes you out, no matter what complexion skin. Its so blah! In addition, it takes away from the freshness, or even a type of sexy in a room. Beige is in the warmer tones, but there is a difference... it isn't sexy. Soooo when you translate that in a bedroom.... annnnnd its for a young successful bachelor... Now that's a total form of lost in translation. Wouldn't you agree?

Now gray is the new black, but gray is fresh. Gray is also flattering when you merge different shades of gray together and much more forgiving. Not soooo easy with black. In addition, it's light, modern, and versatile. I brought in a mix of blue, teal, silver, brown and white... it takes on a bit more sexy. Light enough for a woman but it remains masculine enough for a single boy. Kinda reminds you of a sexy Slinky dress?

All items were found in various places. From Home goods to Horchow. Calvin klein pillows with sheets from Marshall's. Just be open and willing to test drive things together. At the end... even though this room is neutral, it is sexy and shimmers, and it is very warm. So please, please, test drive that paint! That would be the backdrop of your room. Make sure your room makes you look good and everything in it. I believe color should allow everything to sing in harmony!

Notice the boards?

When I first walked into this project, all that I could focus on was the existing bulletin boards. The walls were covered with oversized white boards. They were warped, damaged and covered in white flat paint. A true complete eyesore. In addition, I had a tiny budget of $5000.00 and that would include everything in a two week time crunch. The challenge was to fully furnish the space to comfortably house 5 people. The walls were freshly painted and I had no room in my budget for art. I thought to remove the boards, but that would be an additional job all on its own. The boards were set into the walls with glue and 100's of dry wall screws. In addition, every time the walls were painted, the boards were painted as well. If I removed them, there would be a considerable amount of damage. Sanding, patching and resanding... then paint. My other problem, although the space recently repainted, I didn't know what color white (since there are 100 shades of white) and which company the paint came from. That would mean I would have to paint everything. Yup, the whole space. NO WAY! I am a crazy ambitious girl, but I couldn't afford the lost of time, or money. How would I make this office stand out, leave my stamp and create interest on the wall? What is a girl to do?

Soooo after sitting back, I realized I lost the battle with the boards. To be or not to be...it would be. I began to look at the boards with a renewed interest. My new mission, stop fighting with the boards. I decided to make the bulletin boards the main focus and make them ugly no more. Instead of tearing them down and causing more unnecessary work, it was time to make them the main focus. Besides, isn't that more eco? Make use of what is already there and make it the highlight... the most important eye candy.

The boards would get several coats of black paint, black beauty. In a small and narrow office, the black will add instant drama and depth. Since I decided to keep furniture to the minimum, drama on the walls would be a strong contrast, while adding depth and become the art. Sooo, I rolled up my sleeves and out came the brushes, paint and roller. Hair tied up and I was ready to go...

I decided to paint stripes on the smaller board. I wanted it to become a functional piece of art. The office would house a young, creative, modern technical company. Let's face it, Technical groups can be less than exciting. I wanted to bring out their fresh ever evolving side and I wanted the art to do the same. In true tradition of me, I wanted to break up the stripes and fasten a striking red/orange magnetic strip to add an unexpected pop. POP!

In a small space such as this, the space is left clean and the interest is on the walls.

Most people work and stay in the office most of the day, but this group would likely have longer days than most. The goal was to create a fresh and modern space. Never sleepy, and it was quite important to create a space similar to a second home. Comfort was a priority and yet I wanted the space to be an energizing space. Freshness was key.

Stripes and the company logo were added to break up the black. It is dark, yet manages to remain fresh, bright, light and easy.

At the end, the crew were all excited to get to work and begin working in their brand new office. A job well done? I think so.

So I have a thing for dots. Inspired when I was standing on a NYC subway platform early last year and that helped form my palette. My problem is... I am a lazy artist and I only paint when I have a purpose. So when my clients on 24th Street needed some art, I decided to whip my creative wand and tahhh dahhh. It is very much a "me" piece. It is simple, clean, modern, and you can't help but want to touch it. In addition, the dots are all textural... so it draws you up to it. Soooo... my mission is to add my hungry NYC Street loving style to the homes I am lucky enough to work on. It is something I truly love doing and it's just the beginning of this little subway series. I just wanna create art that is wooed by this gorgeous city. Ahhhh... now that sings to me.

This was the first. It is a quiet piece...as I intended. I want the texture to pop. I intend to create art that people want to touch.

Each dot is molded and layered. It is quite time consuming but super worth it. Gotta make my babies. These two were made for me. That's me at home (below)

Not quite complete but I couldn't wait to bring it to its home.

I know... I have been absent lately because I have been painting more. Anyhoo, I was excited to share new updates. I usually just decorate Interior spaces but there is one thing that I am beginning to truly enjoy...Holiday Decorating. Its fun and festive. I can't wait to dabble in the winter and x-mas decor. After the simplicity of the Halloween decor... I plan to get really creative and jiggey for all future decor. I seriously can't wait! Gahhhh, I am such a geek!

So my beach house project is finally almost done. Now its all about the finishing touches. And to me, the finishing touches are like shoes/ bags/ hats or that amazing scarf. It can make or break the whole entire look. I searched high and low to find the perfect print, or painting that would be simple and offer a freshness. It will sit in a 40 x 60 frame and float about 8 inches over the sofa. Although there is beautiful art everywhere... I couldn't find one that owned a quiet beauty and muttered the color white. I found a few but usually too small to fill the oversized fame. Since I wasn't able to find one that is simple, textual (my signature) and be a mood setter... I finally pulled out the dusty paint brushes. Yes, this lazy artist finally pulled her brushes out again. Why was it easy this time? I was inspired by the sea...the sky and the environment. White doesn't mean simple but it is elegant. The painting is textured, and is built by several layers of paint.

Living in New York and having the luxury of having a patio... is a truly rare treasure and I was lucky enough to work on one. As you can see the before was quite sad. Plastic patio furniture and bland wood plant boxes and a white wall. It was boring, uninviting and colorless. The white wall just jumped out and screamed "white wall". A NYC patio is one that should be inviting and I needed to do just that, but I didn't want to create anything complicated. I wanted to create an ageless outdoor space that would look even better over time. So we rid the plant boxes that sat along the rails and purchased a few new gray plant boxes, and painted two wood plant boxes in a rich terracotta color. The biggest change was the white wall. I whipped out the paint brushes and got right to work. I painted the wall in 4 different gray color variations. I layered the colors on top of one another to give it a distressed silvery gray NYC wall. Although I wanted the wall to be distressed, I still wanted it to be an elegant element. That was accomplished by picking a gray that has a soft hint of silver in matte and owns no shimmer. The results is a simple clean finish that doesn't fight against the surrounding environment. Ahhhh NYC. The best part... I had the pleasure of giving three young trees a loving new home! YAY! It's all in the garden.

A rugged statement

For my new office project, I did a majority of my shopping at Ikea. My budget was limited but I knew the Executive office needed some punch. I kept the furniture clean, light and airy because of the small space. So I decided to leave the details on the floor.

At first, I was completely torn between the two, but knew the patch rug (image on top) would make a strong statement. The grays, variation of browns would tie all the colors in. I was surprised Ikea even carried the patchwork hide rug... it was truly a pleasant surprise. In addition, it was extremely affordable. It sold for 150 and the hide below 250 (because it was bigger). Amazing. Patch hide rugs normally run for at least twice that. After laying them out and dancing around the two for about ten minutes, I decided to go with the bolder patch rug. It was a better size and i like statement pieces. Besides, the hide below was too big in size and much too soft looking... I needed one strong element in the room and this was it.

Plating it all up

It all started when I discovered a blue Kate spade serving plate (upper left corner) that my client owned and I thought it was too pretty to hide away in a cabinet. So why not hang it up? And that's where it all began. We started to search for additional plates that would work with the exsisting plate without being too matchy matchy. We discovered some great plates at Anthropologie and a few at other shops. Before displaying them on the wall, I had one single wall in the kitchen painted with Benjamin Moore paint, in the color Black beauty. It gives the wall definition and dept. This wall is the very first thing you see when you enter the kitchen, it's important that it would make a bold statement. In it's simplicity, it's inviting and now the kitchen owns a gallery of rich colors in it's sea of black. To add additional interest, I hung each plate off center, slightly off balance which gives it that pretty, but not a oooo sooo pretty statement. Too pretty is something I often want to avoid, especially when hanging plates on the wall...avoiding the granny look. The couple that inhabits this space are young and newly married so giving the kitchen a slight three legged off balance feel offers a new modern finish.

When I stepped into this space (Naked Lunch), I knew I had to create an area that people would be drawn to...instead of the cold stare. This corner of the bar is an addition to the front of the space. It is a sad little corner. A cold stare. The back bar to a popular Soho lounge with a strong night life seen. Hmmm... this bar has been around 15 years. There was no real updating since the doors open...a few minor tweeks here and there. The walls were in multi colors of three, or four, and can you spot the palm trees? Allow me to point them out, one sits on the ledge of the window, and the other sitting on top of the bar. My greatest handicap was the tight budget. In addition, I would play the part of lone ranger. Many different hats of Painter, contractor, and wand whipper in a toto. So what is a girl to do? Revamp a small space and keep the integrity of the 15 year history. Update it without major renovations... again, allow me to say no additional man power. In addition, the most important... be sure to create a look that will draw people in...,may I ask again?

AFTER

Due to the budget, going against what already existed in this particular space would be a major error. Instead, I worked with what was already there and made each detail stand out. Paint is always the best and most inexpensive solution to revamp spaces, especially this lonely little corner. I painted the walls a deep gray. I picked a color close to the existing tiling on the back wall (see first picture) so it would all unite in harmony and make the space look larger than it really is. I then distressed the corner of the walls with different tones of paint adding to the vintage appeal. I then painted the counter of the bar, added gold leaf and finished it off with resin.

To finalize all, a space is not truly finished without art. I had a few sheets of plexi glass cut into squares and rectangles. I then painted a few tiles and for a few other tiles, I added images. Some images of Soho, street art images, and art from the owners young niece. I also added mirrored plexi's to the mix. The results...it is no longer just a plain wall, but a space that invites you towards it. It is a warm nostalgic piece that also adds elegance. I believe I accomplished exactly what I was asked to do, the space offers a nice warm Hello.

Soooo, I guess that is what a girl should do.

Fire it up

When I first laid eyes on this fireplace... I saw a huge eyesore and instantly wanted to just cover it up. First, The brick appeared to be faux (it wasn't) it looked cheap and the colors were just too heavy for this petite apartment. It sits in the center of the room and is the very first thing you look at. Sometimes that is just not a good thing. Fireplaces are special in the big NYC. Real fire burning ones are rare and extremely hard to find. I wanted the fireplace to remain a focal point, and be the centerpiece of the room, but I had to erase the eyesore. Time to dress this baby up.

So let's focus on the before. Yup... can't miss it. It's a fireplace.

And the After. What I created was a visual delight. It's fresh, urban and delightful. I took a clean modern approach so it would have a modern classic feel. We just covered the brick up and dressed it up in a brand new outfit. It instantly opens up the room.

Hanging it up

I think that Fashion is just about every ladies sideline sport. And if it isn't, it should very well be. Being a New York woman, there are a few challenges tossed our way. For example, too many shoes and not enough room. We would all love our own custom closets, but for those of us (boo) that doesn't have that luxury... creative solutions are a must. Fashion is an art. No matter how you put it... it's an expression of self. A creative outlet and dammit... it makes us feel oooo sooo good to shift out booties into the perfect pair of jeans. In my world, I am always trying ways to fuse the world of Fashion and Interior decor. So for the next few weeks... my goal is create beautiful solutions/ or find solutions that will transform our space into fashion friendly homes. This week...let's focus on hanging it up. So don't put that necklace back in that little box, or toss into the bowl with all of the other stuff. Your favorite necklace shouldn't lay upon a bowl full of old batteries, rubber bands and movie tickets. Jewelry...That is your art. So why not hang it up? Solutions are simple. Get a great tack board, add some amazing pins and just display it all over your wall.

This is the Kullen Chest of drawers from Ikea. It is a simple piece, one that can work with almost any Interior decor. It retails for $159.00 which makes this an attractive piece. It's also quite sturdy for it's low budget price. When we saw it, we had to have it. Quite impressive looking. So two dressers were purchased, but I didn't want to keep it plain. I simply dressed it up with handle pulls. It almost looks like a cool piece of luggage. A truly strong masculine statement. My client, he will be happy when all is done. I can't wait.

I am finally done with the Barber Shop project. It was tough because we had to squeeze all of the renovation within a week. I had to come in late nights to add all the tweeks that the shop needed. Although the shop is small (about 400 Sq ft) they really pack the boys in. A real hot spot where men fill every corner patiently waiting or their Barber to get to them. All Barber's (btw) are all young and hipsters. A laid back environment invites business men, blue collar men, and a mix of artists. The owner is warm, super cool, loves his shop, an artist at heart and adores his city. At the end, I think we brought in the city.

Lighting can transform any space. Choose it wisely. It should be special and/or create a mood. Bedrooms should have warm lighting. The living room can be fun and inviting. Perhaps a conversation piece? Dining? Create an ambiance... over head lighting is the usually a favorite. But instead of a pendant light..choose an over sized floor lamp.

This is all taken from my recent Gramercy project. This space needed lighting attention. It barely gets any sunlight.

Soooo I am doing a little bit of everything but... this..THIS... halts me from all. I am a sucker for Lucite. i just think it's a wonderful way to add that modern glam into any style home. it doesn't matter if your space is modern or traditional. I think Lucite will just instantly update your home. i would like to compare it to great cuff links, or earrings. So this is going into a clients home... and perhaps mine. So now if I could just get myself to focus on finishing my class projects...

Cb2 Oliver appetizer plates. 2.95 each. So cute. Why cover it up with food? I decided to dress up my client's wall with these plates.

Disc Adhesive Plat Hanger is an easy way to hang plates. You just wet the inner side with a dash of water. Rub it in and allow it to just sit for 5 minutes. It wont damage your plate. And heres the good part... you want it off... soak in warm water and it removes easily.

I found mine at the container store.

Kitchen isn't complete but I couldn't wait to share the results.

Wall bowl

I don't know about you but I dislike traditional fish tanks. Especially the ones made for residential homes. Tanks can be beautiful...very beautiful. Plants, gravel and fish adds up to beauty but with that black chunky hood... that is simply a distraction to your decor, and the beauty of the fish. Biorbe came up with these not so tradition tanks... a new classic with the ***yawn*** traditional black chucky hood. In addition,I fell in love with the wall bowl. Instant art. And unlike traditional bowls... this comes with a built in air pump.

Soooo...what have we learned today? Stepping away from tradition can be a very good thing. The perfect way to add life into your current surroundings.

When I was a child, I use to go to the garment factories with my Grandmother. I still remember everything... from rolling dust bunnies, the smell of oiled machines, and working steamers. I would swing on the gianormous clothing racks (well, gianormous to me cause I was a shrimp) and the high stools would become my vehicle to swivel around and around and around. I truly remember the chairs. Some were coated with a dark green...worn and chipped from the wear and tear. I could see the gray steel that layed under the paint. The steel... made to withstand abuse. Each chair would be dressed with their very own padded seat cushions. The chairs wore them like name tags. Each lady made one to protect their butts from pain caused by sitting on the seats for long periods of time. I remember all of it's practical details...the simplicity...I loved. So there is no wonder why I am blogging these chairs. A break to the unexpected. It is far more than a shot of nostalgia...it is an element of surprise that can be brought into one's space. Pull in a few of these up to a heavy wood table. You know how I love the contrast! It is unexpected. I appreciate the unexpected.

A wonderful client of mine has turned my attention to this amazing wax. A little pinch of museum wax on the back of a frame stabilizes it, and holds its position firmly against a wall. Level your artwork and it’ll stay level. If you rotate works on display at home, pull the framed art off the wall, remove the wax, and then reuse it on the next piece you hang. It’s handy for gently tethering display pieces to shelves, too.

I created a Mirrored Plexi wall. All tiles were cut down to various sizes. I painted and sprayed some tiles with various shades of teal, Gold, White... and added texture, and/or messages, and images. Others... I allowed the reflection to come through. Perfect for a high traffic area.

Storage solutions in small New York spaces can be tricky. There is the classic bookshelf, but sometimes it can feel so dorm room-ish or heavy. So here is a solution that would allow you to display all art and framed works on these floating shelves. When I was in Fashion... I wanted to transform the t-shirt. I am not talking about the blah t-shirt, but a true woman's t-shirt. One that would that can take mass transit all on it's own. Sexy, easy and relaxed. There is nothing that is more complex than taking classics and molding it into your own. Making it your signature and with all that...making it work. That's the challenge... simple ideas... make it work.

It has been about a year since I decided to truly work my way into the industry of decor. I LOVE IT! It is my calling and I am growing with my ideas. My passion is undeniable and I would like to show it in more ways than one. What I am thrilled about is that my confidence has grown and I have an understanding of my style. Industrial elegance.

Making my signature... I want to take a play on classic design. Clean and modern...while never forgeting the classics. Mix concrete, nuts and bolts. Street art... photography... Painted and distressed plastered walls with crisp and perfect linens. That is yum to me... like Mc Donald fries with the right amount of salt... right! Within these two years I have been blessed with projects and gained the trust of clients... its auw inspiring and I must not take for granted. Art...

What can I say about art? I love art and rarely neglect adding at least one form of art in my spaces. I am a Designer that quietly loves arts and crafts, but most of all... the whipping of a paint brush. In this space... the room was narrow and ceilings low. I plan to add art and framed works throughout the living room/ and dining area. So the canvases are 6X12's. In addition, the fact that the small canvases in a series of 9 create a larger piece of interest rather than one large predictable piece over the sofa. NYC always inspires me. The city streets... I think it's beauty...soooo it goes on the wall.

What can one do with a paper lantern? Paper lanterns are cool and quite the inexpensive way of covering up ugly light fixtures. Paper lanterns became super popular about 8 years ago in NYC. Since most of us rent... 10 bucks for a paper lantern is the friendliest way of doing so. Yet...I am quite bored with the whole look. So with a new project and a tight budget... I took this paper lantern and transformed it with the use of sheer fabric, and fabric glue.
So this OOoooo soooo ugly light fixture gets dressed up. My client is ultra fem so this fixture was the perfect solution for this park slope rental. At the end the project cost less than $40.00.

As for weekend quick fixes… there is a such thing. Magic can happen on a three day home makeover and yes...you can do it on a mini budget. It takes focus, a realistic budget and heavy duty man power. My recent quickie brewed from the ingredients of $1000.00 budget, a single mother, clutter due to a lack of organization. It doesn't stop there... there was plenty of hand me down funiture from her relative... from a boy. ***Sign*** The typical black leather sofas and it's the plushy over-sized ones back from the 90's. OUCH!

Honestly, when I first walked into the space... I truly second guessed myself. Covering the sofas was separate heaps of clothing, old magazines, toys, bags and more bags. There were piles upon piles of things with with no way of oganizing it all. So the first thing on my list was to find shelves that would fit the budget. So by luck, I found two chocolate colored shelves around the corner from my client's home. The shelves took the bulk of the budget, but was so important. It would create organziation and "stuff" can become visually appealing. Paint was second on the list. We said good bye to the yellow-dingy walls by dressing it up with two coats of stalk white paint. I also added a modern green accent wall. I then shopped the streets and found colorful warm pillows with removable and washable covers. One Plushy rug, sheer curtains, and lots of imagination. I also purchased two 24 X 24 canvases and created art that is both soothing, and colorful.

Although it is fun to always buy new items... no space can be complete if it isn't clean, or organized....and boy...did we get it organzied. In addition, when you work with a super tight budget... think about the problem and make that the NUMBER 1 issue to tackle. In this case, clutter was the number 1 problem. I solved that issue with the shelves. It used half the budget but without it... it would simply be a "pretty" but "messy" room. Sooooo... once again there is a way to transform a space within a few days.

Eco friendly

Let's talk trees. I know we are all concern about the global warming situation. It's quite scarey and all too real. For all the folks that know me all too well, I always need to add a bit of green to one's home. If I had my way we would have trees on every city block. Since we don't and due to our shortage of greens, and trees, we need to create it. Trees are our oxygen producing friends. They are life givers. Let's return the favor. We can't wait for the city to take responsibility to quickly change and add to our tree shortage issue. Truly, it can begin with us... as individuals. I ask all those around not to wait for something to happen. We can't afford to wait for our neighbors, friends, or city to make the difference. Start within your own space. Go out and purchase a indoor friendly tree. It would be best to buy trees that have been raised in an indoor setting and require little light. Keep your tree friend in a pot best suited for you home and the tree. A smaller space, requires smaller pot. This also limits the growth of trees. In addition, it adds true beauty and oooooo soooo better than the fakes.

I also recommend using outdoor style pots in an indoor space. They look more industrial and chic.

And so it's spring and somehow this is the time when we would love to redo all that we have. That may include redoing the closet, or revamping your apartment. Sometimes all you need to do is remove the heavy drapes, add some sheers and let the sun shine in. That is my personal favorite... just invite the warmth and brillant rays of the sun into my space. I am a native New Yorker and understand the challenges of privacy. Sheers? Easier said than done. I hate the idea of my neighbor catching a glimsp of me because their windows are only 6ft away. So why not buy double rods? This will allow you to have one privacy curtain on the top rod and panels of sheers on the bottom. Worth the investment and time to install. There is nothing more healing than allowing the sun in.
